I decree, it is Rayon Challis week. I am so excited to be on the brink of introducing my first collection of Rayon Challis fabrics very soon. But I know that you might wanna know some stuff about the fabric itself before you take the fluid-y, fashion-y, and possibly mysterious plunge into this gorgeous base cloth.
So this week I will be sharing all that I know about working, washing, designing, and sewing with this lovely material and sharing some rockin projects that we've made here in the fabric lab (ha) so far. To help me do that, if you have any questions, concerns, thoughts (fears?) about the material please leave me some of that in the comments section and I might be able to help you more specifically.

ReplyDeleteA question: Rayon--is it or is it not a "natural" fabric? I always thought it was synthetic, but someone told me it's natural. I'll accept your verdict!
ReplyDeleteRayon is a man made "natural" fiber it is essentially made from wood pulp, with added chemicals to strengthen the fibers in order for them to be spun, so it would never exist in nature, (ergo it being man made,) but it is made from natural materials, so it dyes and breathes like a natural fiber.
DeleteRayon was invented to be an artificial silk in the 1880s, so although in the grand scheme of things it has only been around a short while, it has a long history as a luxury fabric loved for its sheen and hand.
Can you tell I love working with rayon?

ReplyDeleteI was wondering if you can wash & dry rayon in a washing machine. I have had some bad experiances with rayon clothing from Old Navy, and I don't know if this is because my husband dried them in the dryer or if the material was cheap.

ReplyDeleteWhen sewing with rayon, what kind of thread, sewing machine needle and what size needle is best? I am assuming some of my issues have been caused by not using the right supplies. Also, cutting out rayon has been a real challenge for me in the past. Any suggestions that are not tedius and take the fun out of sewing? Pressing suggestions would be great as well.

Do we call Rayon something different in the UK? I've never seen it in a fabric shop? We have viscose is that at all like it? Or could we just be dropping the rayon part and the challis we can see in the shop would be likely to be rayon? Having rarely had much sewing success when I venture away from cottons the whole area is a bit murky from me. I've only just begun to get some pretty good results with crepe

ReplyDeleteCan rayon be ironed or is it more sensitive to burning? Does it snag easily like a nylon would? If I have to use my seam ripper, will the fabric be forgiving? Is it slippery like voile? Is it more transparent like voile? What weight is this rayon considered to be - warm enough to wear as a comfortable shirt in winter or preferably for summer clothing and layer with something else in the winter?
